Road Rules Returns Tonight With Viewers Revenge
Two and a half years after it was left for dead by MTV, Road Rules--the first competitive reality series of the modern reality TV era--returns with a new format and structure. Road Rules: Viewers' Revenge debuts at 9 p.m. ET tonight. This will be the 14th season of the show, which in its most recent years devolved into an ugly, poorly executed imitation of Fear Factor and Survivor. With the game adopting a new structure that will allow viewers to select replacements for eliminated cast members, the show will not be returning to its roots, sending a group of 20-somethings out on a road trip to complete tasks together. Instead, the show will stay anchored in California, The show will air two episodes every week, one on television, and one online, and will unfold in real time. As MTV revealed earlier, six cast members will "nominate the weakest male and female for elimination" after each task, and "viewers at home will vote which of those two cast members will enter an elimination face-off." That competition will be broadcast online, if anyone can find the video on MTV's ridiculously unusable, colossally useless web site, which right now unsurprisingly says little about the new show. In addition, viewers will select a new cast member to challenge and maybe replace the other cast member. And MTV says the "now ex-Road Ruler ... can lobby the viewers to put him/her back in the game" as a challenger. The six initial cast members are Abram (Road Rules South Seas), Adam (Road Rules 10: The Quest), Shane (Road Rules Campus Crawl), Kina (Road Rules Xtreme), Susie (Road Rules Australia), and Veronica (Road Rules Semester at Sea).Road Rules 2007: Viewers' Revenge [MTV] ... Mtv Reveals Cast For Road Rules 2007: Viewers Revenge
Taking a cue from Microsoft, MTV has named the new season of its second reality show Road Rules 2007. The subtitle, Viewers' Revenge, identifies the show's new interactive elements. Viewers will select "who from the RV ends up in the MTV Online elimination round, and ... who from the roster of replacements on MTV.com competes against that Road Ruler for their spot," according to MTV. But viewers aren't entirely in control. Here's how the game works, according to a press release:"After each weeks mission, the cast will return to home base and the cast, themselves, will nominate the weakest male and female for elimination. Immediately after the show airs, viewers at home will vote which of those two cast members will enter an elimination face-off that will air exclusively on roadrules.mtv.com. At the same time the viewers are nominating a cast member to send into elimination, they will also vote for the challenger from The Pit Crew -- an internet replacement board of potential male and female replacements. ... If the current Road Rules cast member wins the competition, he/she returns to the RV -- and the cast-mates who nominated him/her for elimination. If he/she loses, the challenger replaces him/her with the now ex-Road Ruler joining the other potential replacements on the internet board where he/she can lobby the viewers to put him/her back in the game." Because of this, the RV won't exactly travel around the entire country; "home base" refers to California, presumably Los Angeles. They will only "travel to overnight locations for their mission and nomination," MTV says. The initial six passengers in the RV mostly consists of people who are currently making their livings on the Challenges. They are: Abram (Road Rules South Seas), Adam (Road Rules 10: The Quest), Shane (Road Rules Campus Crawl), Kina (Road Rules Xtreme), Susie (Road Rules Australia), and Veronica (Road Rules Semester at Sea). The show debuts Tuesday, Jan. 30 at 9 p.m. ET, but a preview/casting special will air Jan. 23rd at 10.Viewers Take the Wheel as MTV's Road Rules Returns with "Road Rules 2007: Viewers' Revenge" [MTV press release] ... Road Rules Returns In January With Viewer Votes Controlling The Game
Road Rules will return to MTV this January, more than two years after it was cancelled. and aired its last episode. MTV has confirmed that, as I reported last March, the series will return with a new game that places viewers in control. Reality television's first competitive reality series will now air in real time, and allowing viewers will "determine through an online vote which cast member is eliminated each week," according to The Hollywood Reporter. Two episodes will air weekly, "one on-air and one on MTV's broadband video channel Overdrive," with voting taking place after the televised episode. MTV's Brian Graden said, "This is MTV's first reality show where viewers are actually casting the show and rendering the verdict about who they liked most and least." Executive producer Jonathan Murray put it more bluntly, saying that, at long last, those of us who bitch online will be able to control an entire series, which is of course what we wanted all along. "Viewers of reality shows have always been impassioned -- just go to the message boards, and you'll see this. ... The new 'Road Rules' takes that passion and allows viewers to channel the outcome of the show," he said. While Road Rules broke new ground when it debuted 11 years ago, this isn't exactly new now. The first season of Big Brother, for example, did essentially the same thing, airing on TV and online in real time, and giving viewers control. And we all know how that failed, mostly because American viewers make irrational decisions, voting out the people they hate even though those are the people that make reality television interesting. The newly revived series also sound familiar because it seems to be borrowing from its own spin-off: The Hollywood Reporter says "the new cast will consist of "six of the most infamous former cast members," and two of them "will duel" each week to see who returns to the RV. Former cast members facing off in a duel? Where have we seen that before?New rules as 'Road' returns for MTV [Hollywood Reporter] ... More
