Indias Outsourcing Industry To Grow By 32.6 Percent
(InfoWorld) - Benefitting from a boom in offshore outsourcing, India's software and services exports are estimated to grow by 32.6 percent to over $31 billion in the Indian fiscal year to March 31, according to data released Tuesday by the National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom). Indias top outsourcing companies,Tata Consultancy Services,Infosys Technologies, andWiproreported earlier this month strong growth in revenue and profits for the quarter ended December 31, mainly on increased volumes of business. The country is on course to achieve $60 billion in exports by 2010, NASSCOM said. IT services including software development are expected to contribute $18 billion to exports in the year to March 31, while business process outsourcing (BPO) and call centers are likely to contribute another $8.3 billion, according to Nasscom in Delhi. Engineering services, research and development (R&D) services, and product development work are expected to contribute a further $5.0 billion. The data includes exports by both Indian outsourcing companies, and Indian operations of multinational services and technology companies like IBM, Dell, Oracle, and Accenture. The total Indian software and services industry, including sales to the domestic market, is estimated to grow during the fiscal year by about 31 percent to $39.7 billion, Nasscom said. Employment in the country's software and services sector is likely to reach 1.6 million by March 31, up from 1.28 million in the previous year, according to Nasscom. India's outsourcing industry is riding aboom in outsourcing. A report released by management consulting firm McKinsey & Co. and Nasscom has forecast that India's outsourcing industry can grow at an annual rate of over 25 percent to generate export revenue of about $60 billion by 2010. To get to this revenue, however, India will have to improve the quality of education and train more staff to counteran expected shortageof 500,000 staff by 2010, according to Nasscom. The association has proposed the setting up of a chain of finishing schools for IT professionals to make them more employable. A three to four-month honing of technical skills and training on soft skills like better communications will help bridge the gap between manpower supply and demand by at least 30 to 40 percent, Nasscom said.... Indias Wipro Posts Strong Growth In Revenue, Profits
(InfoWorld) - Indias third largest outsourcer, Wipro, on Wednesday reported strong growth in revenue and profits for the quarter ended December 31, a trend for Indian outsourcing companies during the quarter. Tata Consultancy Services(TCS) andInfosys Technologies, the largest and second largest outsourcers in India, respectively, also reported robust results for the quarter, as more U.S. and European companies, including tech, retail, auto, banks and healthcare, sent work offshore to India. Wipro of Bangalore saw strong volume growth in its global IT business, particularly from its enterprise application services, technology infrastructure services, and its practices in the energy and utilities markets, the company said. There is a shift in the market from large outsourcing contracts towards shorter and smaller contracts, and more specialist and single process deals, according to outsourcing advisory firm, Technology Partners International(TPI), of Houston, Texas. Service providers with headquarters in India, such as Wipro, TCS, and Infosys, are reaping the benefits of the trend towards single-process and specialist deals, TPI said Tuesday. Wipro posted revenue of Indian Rupees 39.64 billion ($899 million at the exchange rate on the closing day of the quarter), up 43 percent compared to the same quarter a year earlier. The company's profits grew by 40 percent to Rupees 7.45 billion. The results are based on U.S. generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), and refer to the third quarter of Wipro's fiscal year, which differs from the calendar year. The company's fourth quarter ends on March 31 this year. Wipro has both a domestic business and an export business. Revenue from its export business for the quarter was Rupees 28.67 billion, up 35 percent over exports in the same quarter in the previous year. The company added 37 new clients during the quarter in its export business. The company had 66,176 employees as of December 31 in its export business, of which 49,313 were deployed on software and IT services, while the balance 16,863 were in the companys business process outsourcing (BPO) business. Indian outsourcing companies are competing for staff with multinational services companies like IBM that have set up operations in India to take advantage of lower cost workers. Wipros operational improvements and higher profitability in its BPO business helped it offset the pressure on profitability from increasing wages and the appreciation of the Rupee over all major currencies, the company said....
