Christianity And Apologetics :: Re: Ot Vs Nt
Author: youngborean Posted: Fri Dec 08, 2006 7:03 pm (GMT -5) Topic Replies: 14 einstein wrote: The New Covenant as interpreted by Paul and the synoptic writers is an example of a major discrepancy in that it defines itself as a covenant of the cross and declares that it supersedes the "Old" Covenant of Sinai. There are serious problems with this interpretation that won't be fully discussed in detail presently but it seems to me that from the description previously posted a fair amount of circular reasoning is required to justify the Christian and New Testament interpretation. To briefly summarize the Christian perspective: 1)The New Covenant is the the covenant of the cross, and with his crucifixtion, Jesus takes away all past and future sins as the final "super-sacrifice". 2) This supersedes the "Old" covenant made by God with the children of Israel at Sinai. 3) The "law" is not really the problem- it's that the nation broke the covenant and the law was impossible to keep. 4) There is an admission of some righteous individuals by virtue of the grace of God. Before proceeding I wish to ask another question- When was this New Covenant instituted? I fail to see the problems. The new covenant was clearly a super covenant in Jeremiah 31. Jer 31:31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: Jer 31:32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day [that] I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD: Jer 31:33 But this [shall be] the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. Jer 31:34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more. Clearly this is a covenant not according to the covenant of Moses. It is also clearly a better (super) covenant on 2 premises. The law will be place in the heart of all people (v.33), and sins be remembered no more (v 34). It was these 2 things that the law of Moses were unable to accomplish. Here Jeremiah's vision of a new covenant was one of a better covenant as well, based on these 2 premises that never existed under the covenant at Sinai. All covenants were sealed by the shedding of spotless blood, we as believers in Messiah assert that the sacrifice of Jesus was the spotless blood. Because he was found guilty and put to death by man's interpretation of the law even though he was blameless according to the law, and because of this the grave was unable to keep him. Therefore the law which has the power to confine all under sin could not apply in this context, and there was a need for the beginning of a new covenant based on God's original religious intention for man, simply living by faith....
