Goddess Durga Arrives At C.p. Tank And Shivaji Park
MUMBAI, INDIA, October 1, 2006: The area of Madhav Baugh in Mumbai's C. P. Tank area are getting ready to welcome the devotees of Goddess Durga. Every year area witnesses endless queues of devotees. The Kalbadevi Sarbajanin Durga Puja Committee (KSDPC), which has been celebrating Durga Puja at Madhav Baugh for the past 77 years, is a must visit Durga Puja mandal for devotees. The KSDP mandal is known for its deity's face, which they claim is unique from most of the Durga Deities in the city. Draped in a bright red Banarasi sari, the Durga Deity which is approximately 20 feet tall stands at the centre along with idols of Ganapati, Mahalaxshmi, Mahasara-swati and Sadanand Kartik. All the Deities at the KSDP mandal are made from eco-friendly material like bamboo, rice grass straws and jute, and the red mud is specially brought from the banks of the River Ganga and the Deities are painted in water colors. The Deities are made by N.C. Paul and Sons, a team of 25 sculptors from Kolkata, who have been associated with the KSDP mandal for more than 50 years.... More

First Ever Immersion In The River Thames For Navaratri Deities
LONDON, ENGLAND, October 3, 2006: Deities made from clay, straw and organic vegetable dyes were immersed in the River Thames, West London, and hundreds from the Bengali community attended the ceremony. This is the first time the community was allowed to give a traditional Navaratri send-off to the Deities by the London port authorities. The Deities, belonging to a tableau measuring 18ft by 20ft, were built at the British Museum by craftsmen who were brought in from the Indian state of West Bengal. The Deities were then moved to the Camden Town Hall where the week-long festival was held. The submergence marked the end of the week-long festival of Durga Puja. The organizers, London Durga Puja Dusserah Committee, said this is the first time in its 40 year history the community had got a chance to observe all the rituals.... More

Sri Lankan Minister In Punjab To Receive Deities
CHANDIGARGH, INDIA, September 27, 2006: The Seetha Eliya Temple (Ashok Vatika), where Goddess Sita was kept in captivity by Ravana located in the Central Province in Sri Lanka, will soon have Deities of Hindu Gods from the Punjab. The Sri Lankan Central Province Minister, V. Radhakrishnan, says both countries are currently in discussions to promote religious tourism to the temple. Radhakrishnan will collect the Deities at the end of a spiritual function held in Banga on Wednesday. The Deities are being donated by Ashok Kanth, the director of Pizza Hut, Kuwait, and originally from the Punjab. Mr. Radhakrishnan, who is also a temple trustee, said over 5,000 people come to the temple every week to worship. Besides being the place where Goddess Sita was kept by Ravana, Radhakrishnan said the temple site also has footmarks of Lord Hanuman. He said the temple site was being renovated with voluntary donations from India and Sri Lanka. BJP's Harjit Singh Grewal said the process would strengthen religious and cultural ties between the two countries.... More
